Desert Agriculture

Into the 21st Century with Ancient Technology

Into the 21st Century with Ancient Technology  Combining ancient Nabatean farming techniques with cutting edge technology is  turning the arid relatively mineral-deprived sandy soil Negev desert into green fields thereby halting desertification.

We will explore many different aspects of this process ranging from a visit to Netafim, the company that invented modern drip irrigation technology to Wadi Mashash, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s agricultural research farm, the only site in Israel where agricultural production is entirely based on the collection and use of the desert’s rare flood waters.

We will sample wines from the Negev Wine route and taste cherry tomatoes, peppers, cheeses, many varieties of unusual fruits and vegetables that have been adapted to desert conditions.  The Ramat Negev Agriculture Research and Development region is working together with the farmers from the region to develop strains of crops best suited to the Negev’s climate, water resources, and soil conditions, and test new techniques from growth.
