March of the Living and Independence Day

April 9-20, 2018

Some trips are designed for fun.

This journey will do both while feeding your Jewish heart and soul.


On April 12th, 2018, thousands of Jews and non-Jews from five continents will begin a march from the anguish of the past to the pride of the present, a pilgrimage beginning at Auschwitz on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and ending at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Israel's 70th Independence Day.



Day 1: Monday, April 9


Visit to Museum of the History of Polish Jews with multimedia exhibit about the Jewish community that flourished in Poland for 1,000 years

Walk the Path of Remembrance from the monument to the heroes of the ghetto uprising past 16 granite blocks dedicated to heroes and events of the ghetto

Visit to Okopowa Cemetery, one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe

Meet with members of the Center for Progressive Judaism (Reform) and Synagogue Etz Chaim

Day 2: Tuesday, April 10


Visit to Treblinka and the Tykocin Synagogue

Tour of Praga Zoo to learn the story of Jan and Antonina Zabinski, subjects of the film The Zoo Keeper's Wife, who were honored as Righteous among the Nations – Righteous Gentiles.

Dinner at the Warsaw JCC and meeting with young members of the Jewish community

After-dinner meeting with Helise E. Lieberman, from the Taube Center for the Renewal of Jewish Life in Poland

Day 3: Wednesday, April 11


Check out of hotel

Leave for Krakow

Visit the old Jewish Quarter of Kazimierz, including Ghetto Heroes Square (where 33 chairs made of cast iron and bronze memorialize the Jewish dead), the Remah Synagogue and Cemetery, Temple Synagogue, and Izaak Synagogue

Day 4: Thursday, April 12


Yom HaShoah- World Wide March of the Living

Visit Apteka Pod Orlem, a pharmacy owned by the only non-Jewish Pole allowed to live in the ghetto, a "righteous gentile" who risked his life to help Jews acquire medicine, food and falsified documents

Trace the path of Krakow Jews to the Plaszow Labor Camp and Oskar Schindler’s Factory

March of the Living from Auschwitz to Birkenau, ending with a special ceremony and singing of “Hatikvah”

Late Evening:  Depart for Israel

Day 5: Friday, April 13


Early arrival in Israel and drive directly to Mitzpe Ramon

Check-in and breakfast at Beresheet Hotel

Day 7: Sunday, April 15


Leave for Jerusalem, stopping twice en route: first at the Machal Memorial to foreign volunteers who lost their lives to support Israel's struggle for independence; then at the Burma Road, built during the War of Independence to circumvent hostile Arab villages cutting off Jerusalem from critical supplies coming from Tel Aviv

Lunch cooked in the Overland kitchen by Shmil Holland, Israeli chef and food scholar

Visit to the 9/11 Memorial, Western Wall and Old City

Dinner overlooking the walls of the Old City

Day 8: Monday, April 16


Visit Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center

Meet with Israeli soldiers and police officers who participated in the March of the Living in Poland as part of Edim b’Madim, Witnesses in Uniform, an integral part of Israeli military training

Tour of Mahane Yehuda market

Guest speaker 

Attend rehearsal for the transition to and celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut at Mount Herzl      

Overnight: Jerusalem



Day 9: Tuesday, April 17


(Optional) Morning yoga

Drive to Tel Aviv

Tour of Jaffa Flea Market

An exclusive fashion / art tour of of Tel Aviv

Join gathering in Rabin Square for the sounding of the sirens, signaling Erev Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day Eve)

Day 10: Wednesday, April 18


Memorial Day ceremony at a Tel Aviv high school

Stories from the battlefield: meet a veteran soldier, a high school student soon to be drafted into the army and an officer currently serving in the army

Picnic Lunch

Bridge ceremony marking the stark contrast between the solemnity of Memorial Day and the joy of Independence Day

Independence Day Eve: Let the party begin as Tel Aviv explodes in celebration as we sample the fireworks and the festivities from Rabin Square

Overnight: Royal Beach Hotel, Tel Aviv

Day 11: Thursday, April 19


Yom Haatzmaut

Morning coffee with Uri Savir, the Israeli diplomat whose book was turned into the Broadway hit play Oslo.

Drive to Jerusalem

Gather in Kikar Safra to watch the traditional flyover by Israeli Air Force and then march to the Kotel

Final dinner

Mega Event Concert at Armored Corps Museum, Latrun


Overnight: Tel Aviv - Royal Beach 



Day 12: Friday, April 20
