Shalom and Welcome to Israel

 

Meet your group in the hotel lobby at 2:00 PM. Coffee & cake will be served.

 

  • Welcome to Jerusalem, “Shehecheyanu”, make a toast in a beautiful panoramic lookout.
  • The Biblical Lands Museum – the beginning of the Jewish community in Mesopotamia, visit “Jerusalem in Babylon” exhibition. Followed by a speaker for an introduction to our journey in Israel.
  • Authentic welcome dinner

Day 2: Thursday, January 23

 

The Historical Roots

 

Breakfast at the hotel

 

  • Jerusalem Old City – emphasizing the history of the First Temple period and its destruction that led to the exile to the Mesopotamian region, new excavations near the Western Wall, visit Sephardi Synagoues, Old Yishuv Court Museum – how did the Jews live in the Old City under the Ottoman empire and the relationship with their Arab neighbors.
  • Cultural and tasting tour at Machne Yehuda.
  • Meal at Azura – in the Iraqi Market in Machne Yahuda
  • Afternoon tour of Nachlaot neighborhood and visit the Ades Synagogue of Aleppo which has been called the Jewish Sistine Chapel.
  • Evening Hebrew Music Museum private guided tour following the interesting music instruments and culture

Day 3: Friday, January 24

 

From the Holocaust to Redemption

  • Yad Vashem – following the Holocaust in the Arab countries 
  • The Knesset – meet Gila Gamliel. Gila Gamliel is an Israeli politician who currently serves as a member of the Knesset for Likud and Minister for Social Equality. (depending on availability)
  • Musrara neighborhood – tour the neighborhood and discover the Israeli version of the “Black Panthers”.
  • Musical Kabbalat Shabbat with oriental music instruments
  • Shabbat Friday Dinner – home hospitality - with a local Jerusalemite family

Day 4: Saturday, January 25

 

Colorful Culture

  • Track 1: Experience a Shabbat Service with a local community near the hotel
  • Track 2: The Israel Museum – including first part private guided tour of the Shrine of the Book (Aleppo Codex) and the Jewish Culture Exhibitions. Choose to explore on own after the guided tour or go back to hotel.
  • Enjoy a private meal at the Cinemateque, watch “Farewell Bagdad” Film at followed by a talk with the film author of the book - Eli Amir
  • Proceed up to the Northern part of Israel
  • Meet the person who uncovered the lost story of the "Kinneret Yemanites"
  • Dinner at the hotel

Day 5: Sunday, January 26

  • The Banias Nature Reserve – part of the route that Jews were smuggled by foot into Israel during the British Mandate.
  • Tour of Tzfat following the various communities and synagogues.
  • For lunch: try a Yemenite Saluf with a tasty twist.
  • Maimonides grave site in Tiberias

Day 6: Monday, January 27

  • Text learning from the Babylonian Talmud, Kibbutz Hannaton - a pluralistic Jewish learning center. What does the Talmud say about treating the stranger and immigrants?
  • Tour of Wadi Salib neighborhood, Haifa – the beginning of social justice protests in Israel between Sephardic-Ashkenazi Israelis. The neighborhood, after 30 years of being abandoned, is now reviving as an artist colony.
  • Tel Aviv university – meet a professor from Iraqi/Syrian Jewish background – discuss the integration in the academic field (pending on availability)
  • Meet Lyn Julius - a British-based journalist and founder of HARIF, the UK Association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa. The author of “Uprooted - How 3000 Years of Jewish Civilization in the Arab World Vanished Overnight” (pending on availability)

Day 7: Tuesday, January 28

 

The Journey to the Land of Israel

 

  • Israel’s population doubles in its first five years due to immigrants, 40% of whom were from Arab countries - How did Israel cope with all the new immigrants? Visit a Ma'abara (internment camp) that Iraqi Jews lived when they arrived in Israel – talk about the absorption process and the life in these temporary camps. Success or failure?
  • Visit the Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center – personal stories of Syrian Jews, their lives in Syria and their immigration to Israel
  • Kurdish home hospitality and cooking workshop - hear the family’s story and enjoy a delicious authentic meal that you’ll be making together.

Day 8: Wednesday, January 29

 

The Israeli Story

 

  • State of the Art and Visual Identities – Tour of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
  • The fascinating relationship between the Israeli art world and the Zionist narrative.
  • This dynamic tour through the extensive Israeli collection at the museum is an amazing way to visually explore both the Israeli narrative from the early 20th century until today and the development of the local art scene. The latest changes in the exhibition of the Israeli collection reflect the shifting narratives and representation of the different Israeli communities. In this tour we'll follow the thread connecting questions of color and race from the early 20th century to today specifically looking at the story of Jews from Arab countries. At the end of the tour we'll meet with a leading Israeli artist who's works touch directly on these issues.
  • Communities & family stories through a culinary tour at Levinsky Market (replaces lunch)
  • “One Way Ticket” – takes you on a journey with Yossi Alfi’s unique life story beginning in a voyage of a three year old child in 1949 fleeing to Israel from Iraq with his grandmother. His performance takes you back to the past while celebrating the heritage of the old generation with the new. He studies at LAMDA in London and since then has been a well known Israeli actor, director and story teller.
  • Farewell dinner in one of Tel Aviv’s great restaurants.
