Living the Dream- Drinking its Fruit- the slogan of the Bat Shlomo Winery! Hear the incredible story of the winery and settlement, founded by Baron Edmund de Rothschild. Highlighting the importance of community, the winery has partnered with Regavim High School agricultural education program to instill a work ethic and sense of responsibility to help build a stronger civic society.

 

Getting to know you… in the hotel’s organic gardens with an overlook of the beauty of the Galilee.

Stroll through and learn about the extensive private gardens at Mitzpe HaYamim.

In the village of Mrar, an Arab Druze village, our host Aida will lead us in a cooking workshop, and we will explore the many flavors of Israeli culture.

 

Wander through the quaint city of Rosh Pina.  The earliest major wave of immigration, the First Aliya, created small agricultural colonies along the coastal plain.  Rosh Pina, established in 1882 on deserted rocky land, was the first settlement in the Galilee. It is now a desired place to live and visit.

Day 3: Thursday, February 27

 

 

Creating a Modern Gan Eden

Start the day with Dror Israel’s Mirit Sulama and an “Akko @eye level” tour. Walk through the neighborhoods of the city, learn about the recent history of the city and the present of the socio-economic and Jewish Arab situation. At the Akko Educators' Kibbutz, get creative with a Mandala workshop with volunteers. Dror Israel aims to form the grassroots nucleus of an exemplary society in Israel based on the vision of the prophets of Israel and the founders of Zionism.

 

At Goats with the Wind, have a magical lunch at this family-owned goat cheese farm and restaurant.  Everything you will eat comes from the farm.  Meet the goats and enjoy the special touches of the place.

 

Drive to Jerusalem and have dinner at Sima Restaurant, a classic “shipudiya,” from the word “shipud”, skewer, for the way the meat is cooked and served with endless “salatim”- small salads using a wide variety of familiar and unfamiliar ingredients.

 

In the neighborhoods bordering the Mahane Yehuda market, visit Jerusalem’s Challah bakeries at night- Thursday night is the night for this! Take in the smell of Shabbat baking and feel the energy of Shabbat.

Experience Jerusalem’s Old City in a unique way through Tastes of Jerusalem. Tour off-the-beaten track sites and winding alleyways in the Old City of Jerusalem while stopping for tastes of Jerusalem delicacies such as the famous etrog juice, a Jerusalem beigele, hummus at Lina’s, baklava, k’nafae or Jerusalem kugel.

 

Tour Machane Yehuda and accept your challenge for creating the picnic you’ll enjoy on Shabbat!

 

Kabbalat Shabbat with guest Sarah Peters Mali.  Sarah will lead us in a conversation about “The risky business of leadership” and how women can work together to be a supportive force.  Sarah is a Harvard-trained leadership expert who works primarily with young adults, cultivating leadership to build Jewish communal capacity across the globe.

 

Home-cooked Shabbat dinner in the home of Chen and Alon in the Nahlaot neighborhood. We’ll hear their story and delight in this North African inspired dinner.

Tour Shalva, a Jerusalem based organization that provides services to children with special needs and their families. Volunteer with Shalva’s special employees in the workshop.  Help package teas with flavors from across Israel and lend support to their social enterprise.

 

Visit Soda Stream in Rahat, near Beer Sheva. Soda Stream is far more than bubbly water, it’s a company that employs Jewish, Arab, and Christians and embraces the multi-cultural community it creates as well as contributing to the local community through educational initiatives.  Get to know this ‘light unto the nations.’

 

At the village of Lakiya, get a hands-on experience of life in Bedouin society. Discuss Bedouin culture over a cup of sweet Bedouin tea and coffee.   At Sidreh –Lakiya Weaving Project complex to learn about the ideology of the independence movement for Bedouin women. Includes Bedouin lunch

 

A Negev lookout- stop at Ovdat, an ancient Nabatean City, to learn about the ancient desert way of life.

Explore the magnificent Ramon Crater by Jeep and by foot.  Discover the meaning of ‘makhtesh’ and appreciate the largest crater of its kind in the world.

 

Continue to the Lasha Desert Bread Workshop and “bring forth bread from the earth” with Hadas, spiritual baker and teacher. We will share and knead our challot together and join in understanding the spiritual power of shaping the dough.

Drive to Nahal HaBesor and take a short hike including a walk across the suspended bridge that crosses the nahal (riverbed).

 

In Netivot, meet immigrants from North Africa who are dedicated to preserving culture through food through the “Tavlinim” group, Hebrew for “spices,” which was created by Netivot’s Social Services Department to empower women on welfare to earn extra income.   Enjoy a lunch of North African-Israeli food.

 

Striving for Peace- drive to Netiv Haasarah, a moshav on the western border of Israel with the Gaza Strip.  Visit the Peace Wall on the border.  Meet Tsamaret Zamir, an artist and the creator of the project who will talk about life in the moshav in the shadow of the ongoing security situation – and about the hope of a good and peaceful future.  Choose a colorful optimistic tile on which to write a personal wish and later glue to the border wall.

 

Stop for a birds-eye-view of Tel Aviv and a toast to the group on top of Azrieli Tower.

A “Tasting Walk” through Shuk Levinsky, one of Israel’s most interesting markets with a focus on spices and specialty foods.

 

See an Israel that you might not know through the “Street Art” Graffiti Tour with Shirel Horowitz.  n the fascinating Florentine neighborhood, this interactive tour with a talented artist and actor gives you the inside track of Israel’s culture.

Group leader: Shawna Goodman Sone is a trained chef from the Natural Gourmet Cooking School and the Institute of Culinary Education (formerly Peter Kumps's cooking school) in New York City. Shawna was the editor of a Canadian best seller cookbook called Panache which raised close to $160 000 dollars for the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Shawna has been teaching and catering for the past 25 years in Montreal, Toronto, Philadelphia and New York City and currently Raanana. She is married with three sons and is very excited to be leading this incredible journey.

  • For cancellations up to 90 days prior, the penalty will be $500.00 US per person (the deposit)
  • For 89 to 60 days prior to departure the penalty will be 20% of the total tour cost per person
  • For 59 to 30 days prior to departure the penalty will be 50% of the total tour cost per person
  • For 29 to 8 days prior to departure the penalty will be 75% of the total tour cost per person
  • For 7 to 0 days prior to departure the penalty will be 100% of the total tour cost per person
